Corruption claims against PSOE escalate as Senate schedules key government appearances

The Popular Party (PP) is stepping up its political campaign targeting corruption cases associated with the PSOE and the current government, with the PP’s Senate spokesperson Alicia García revealing two crucial appearances before the Upper Chamber’s investigation committee: Attorney General Teresa Peramato is set to be questioned on June 19, and Minister of the Interior Fernando Grande-Marlaska is scheduled to testify on June 30.

These appearances are related to the case of Leire Díez, a former socialist activist known by her nickname “the Ferraz plumber.” According to the PP, Díez held meetings with key figures —such as the former Deputy Attorney General, Diego Villafañe, and the head of the Civil Guard, Mercedes González— reportedly to influence judicial investigations in favor of the administration.

Moreover, the PP is directly pointing to what they consider a corruption scheme that includes alleged attempts to extort judges and prosecutors, linking these actions to high-ranking PSOE figures, including President Pedro Sánchez. Alicia García publicly accused: “Leire planned, García Ortiz executed, and Sánchez ordered,” referring to notes found in Díez’s agenda that include the initials “P.S.”

The Connection to Other Corruption Cases

The committee also plans to investigate links between the Leire case and previous scandals such as the ‘Delcygate’ —a controversy involving Venezuela’s then-Vice President, Delcy Rodríguez, which, according to García, “was the origin of an entire network of corruption, influence trafficking, and abuse of power” surrounding the PSOE.

Other upcoming appearances feature Manuel Aarón Fajardo, a central figure in a money laundering case linked to former President José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, along with Zapatero’s personal secretary, Gertrudis Alcázar.

Amid these allegations and the ongoing inquiries, the Popular Party appears intent on sustaining pressure on the government in an effort to undermine the PSOE as the political showdown grows increasingly intense.
